Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has announced plans to make the study of a foreign language compulsory for Senior High School students, starting from Form 2.
Speaking at the launch of a sanitary pad programme on Thursday, April 24, the Minister outlined the government’s intention to enhance students’ global competitiveness by equipping them with multilingual skills.
“It is the vision of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama that from SHS 2, every Ghanaian student will have the option to choose one major foreign language,” the Minister revealed.
Students will be able to choose from languages such as French, Spanish, German, Chinese, and others one of which will become a mandatory part of their curriculum.
Mr. Iddrisu stated that the foreign language initiative will be integrated into the national curriculum as part of upcoming educational reforms.
“Students will combine their area of study with a compulsory foreign language, such as French or Spanish,” he said.
