An Accra High Court has remanded seven individuals into lawful custody for allegedly engaging in illegal mining activities at Wassa Dunkwa in the Western Region.
The accused — Douglas Bediako, Samuel Tanor, Richard Yaw Sey, Justin Akyirbri, Shon Vitus, Akembasiya James, and Gideon Asordina — face charges of conspiracy and undertaking mining operations without a license.
Presiding over the case, Justice Mrs. Kizita Naa Koowa Quarshie adjourned proceedings to May 15, 2025, when the accused are expected to reappear in court.
According to the prosecution, the individuals were arrested during a special police operation on May 1, 2025, while actively involved in illegal mining activities.
The police captured visuals of the accused working in mining pits, along with footage of their arrest.
During preliminary questioning, the accused claimed they were hired by unidentified individuals to work at the mining site.
A “Sanny” excavator, reportedly operated by Douglas Bediako, was also retrieved from the scene as evidence.
