The Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has signaled a possible upward adjustment in the daily feeding allocation for pupils under the Ghana School Feeding Programme. The amount could rise from the current GHC2 to as much as GHC5 per child, contingent on continued economic improvement.

During a school inspection tour in Accra on Thursday, September 4, 2025, Dr. Lartey told journalists that the ministry has been actively pushing for an increase in the feeding grant to enhance the nutritional quality of meals provided to pupils.

“Currently, the amount allocated per pupil is GHC2. Our ministry has advocated for a GHC5 rate, and ideally, we would prefer even GHC10 if resources allow. The GHC2 figure was reached through negotiation, but we remain hopeful that an improved economy will support the GHC5 target,” she stated.

In preparation for a potential adjustment, the ministry has already conducted capacity-building sessions for caterers nationwide to ensure they are equipped to deliver improved meal services under a revised budget.

“We’re taking a proactive approach. The aim is not to make excuses but to be ready. We want our caterers to hit the ground running once the increment is approved,” Dr. Lartey emphasized.

Her comments come at a time of mounting public concern over the adequacy of the current GHC2 per-child allocation, especially in the face of rising food prices.

Many stakeholders, including parents, educators, and nutrition advocates, have repeatedly called for a review to better reflect the cost of delivering balanced meals in schools.
