Three individuals have been sentenced to a combined 20 months in prison for their roles in a cheating scandal during the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), following a ruling by the Kasoa-Ofaakor District Magistrate Court.
The convicted persons include a teacher, Samuel Armah of Ghana College Senior High School, and two first-year university students: Kwame Oteng Nkansah from Accra Technical University, and Amedeka James from the University of Ghana.
They were apprehended in Kasoa while actively engaging in various acts of examination fraud.
Armah, who was serving as an invigilator at the time, was caught with leaked answers to the Social Studies Paper 1 on his mobile phone, which he was allegedly dictating to candidates during the exam. He was fined 80 penalty units and sentenced to eight months in prison.
Nkansah received a six-month jail term and an 80 penalty unit fine for impersonating a student of Ghana College SHS, named as Quayson Francis Atta. Similarly, James was given the same sentence for writing the exam for his twin brother, Amedeka Justice.
During a routine inspection at one of the examination centers, Seth Sabah Sewornoo-Banini, Chief Executive of the Awutu Senya East Municipality, identified irregularities in the seating arrangements and emphasized that stricter measures would be introduced to curb further misconduct.
The Municipal Education Director, Frank-Etrue Hayford, strongly denounced the incident, reiterating the Education Directorate’s commitment to upholding the integrity of the examination process.
