A violent rainstorm has caused severe destruction at Adankwaman Senior High School in the Assin South District of the Central Region, just days before the school was set to reopen for the new academic term.
The storm, which hit on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, ripped off the roofs of several critical school buildings, including a six-unit classroom block, the boys’ dormitory, dining hall, and learning pavilions. Teaching and learning materials such as desks, textbooks, and other supplies were also destroyed during the brief but intense downpour.
Although no injuries were reported as students were still on vacation authorities say the extent of the damage could delay the scheduled reopening on Saturday, October 11, 2025. Many of the affected buildings are now unsafe and unusable, with no immediate alternatives available to accommodate students.
Established over 40 years ago, Adankwaman SHS still operates some of its academic and residential facilities from aging mud structures, many of which have deteriorated over time, making them especially vulnerable to such disasters.
Describing the situation as dire, members of the school’s management committee and teaching staff are urgently appealing to the government, the Ghana Education Service (GES), NGOs, and philanthropists for immediate support to repair and restore the damaged infrastructure.
“This is a serious setback. Without immediate intervention, reopening will not be possible. The structures are unsafe for both students and staff,” one committee member said.
Officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in the Assin South District have since visited the school to assess the damage. They described the scene as “disturbing” and assured that a detailed report would be forwarded to the appropriate authorities for prompt action.
Concerned parents and community members have also added their voices, calling for swift assistance to avoid disruptions to the academic calendar and ensure student safety.
