The 2020 Twifo Atti-Morkwa District Best Farmer, Mr. Isaac Agyire, has appealed to government to prioritize support for vegetable farmers in Ghana. Mr. Agyire, who also serves as Chief Executive Officer of Showbwoy Farmers, noted that vegetable growers face major challenges that restrict productivity and weaken their contribution to the national economy.
He observed that while cocoa farmers continue to receive significant backing from the state, vegetable farmers struggle to access essential inputs such as fertilizers, pesticides, and improved seeds. This, he explained, has widened the gap between local producers and foreign imports, making Ghana increasingly reliant on vegetables from abroad.
Mr. Agyire emphasized that vegetables are not only central to Ghanaian diets but also vital to public health. With the right investment and support, he argued, local farmers could produce enough to satisfy domestic demand, reduce imports, and create sustainable jobs for the youth. Through Showbwoy Farmers, he has been training young people in modern agricultural practices, and he encouraged more youth to consider farming as a viable career.
