Members of the Ejisu Municipal Assembly have suspended their planned vote of no confidence against the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mrs Jerryne Asante, following the intervention of President John Dramani Mahama.
The Assembly Members had earlier given the MCE a one-week ultimatum to resign or face removal from office, citing what they described as serious administrative lapses under her leadership.
The deadline expired on Friday, July 31, without further action after President Mahama constituted a committee, chaired by Dr Frank Amoakohene, Ashanti Regional Minister, to conduct a fact-finding exercise into the concerns raised by the Assembly Members.
Mr George Kuntu Blankson, Assembly Member for the Kwamo Electoral Area and spokesperson for the Assembly Members, told the media on Monday that the Members had put their intended action on hold pending the outcome of the committee’s work.
He said the committee’s intervention provided an opportunity for the issues affecting the Assembly to be thoroughly investigated before any further action was taken.
The Assembly Members had planned to convene an emergency meeting to initiate the process of passing a vote of no confidence against the MCE.
However, the exercise did not take place after the Electoral Commission was unavailable to supervise the process.
The Assembly auditorium, designated as the venue for the meeting, was also found locked.
Some Assembly Members alleged that estate officers informed them that the facility had been locked by the MCE’s personal aide, who had taken away the keys.
Mr Blankson said the Members remained resolute in pursuing their concerns and expected the President to act on their demands after the committee submitted its findings.
“We are waiting on the President to act on our concerns this month. By the end of this month, if the President grants our wish, we will be satisfied. But if we do not hear anything by then, they will hear from us,” he said.
