Former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Mr Akwesi Agyemang, has backed the government’s directive encouraging the wearing of Fugu as part of efforts to promote Ghana’s culture and traditions.

He said the initiative was a positive step towards strengthening national identity and boosting tourism.

Mr Agyemang made the remarks on Denkyiraman Radio’s National Agenda programme.

He recalled that former President John Agyekum Kufuor introduced Friday Wear, a policy which significantly enhanced the visibility and patronage of Ghanaian fabrics both locally and internationally.

Mr Agyemang said during his tenure at the GTA, he ensured that the Black Stars wore kente at the 2022 FIFA World Cup to showcase Ghana’s cultural heritage on the global stage.

He stressed the need to preserve and promote Ghana’s rich cultural values, urging citizens and institutions to prioritise Made-in-Ghana fabrics over foreign attire.

Mr Agyemang noted that traditional wear such as Fugu should not be limited to specific days but embraced as part of everyday lifestyle.

He called on all Ghanaians to take pride in wearing local fabrics as a way of promoting national culture and supporting development.
