Seven bodies have been recovered from a collapsed mining pit at Manso Kaneago in the Amansie South Municipality of the Ashanti Region, where eight illegal miners were trapped while searching for gold deposits.
Officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the District Security Council (DISEC) and the Police are making frantic efforts to retrieve the remaining body still trapped underground.
The incident occurred at about 2200 hours on Thursday when the mining pit collapsed while the miners were working at the site.
According to officials, about 12 miners were operating at the site when the incident occurred, with four managing to escape while the remaining eight were trapped underground.
The exact cause of the collapse remained unclear, with investigations underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Municipal Chief Executive for Amansie South, Mr Benjamin Marfo, who spoke briefly to the media, said he was leading a team to the site to gather further information on the incident.
He said efforts were ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the collapse and the entrapment of the miners.
Officials of NADMO, the Police and DISEC were expected to return to the site to continue the search and recovery operation for the remaining victim.
The recovered bodies had been deposited at the morgue.
