The Assembly Member for Twifo Darmang, Hon. Kofi Sampson, has sounded an alarm over the deplorable and life-threatening state of the toilet facility at the Twifo Darmang D/A Basic School.
The decades-old structure, he explained, has deteriorated to the point of collapse, with sections already falling apart. Yet, due to the absence of an alternative, pupils and teachers are still compelled to use it.
Hon. Sampson described the situation as a “ticking time bomb” and a serious public health hazard.
“The toilet is no longer fit for use. It has become a death trap, yet pupils and teachers have no choice but to rely on it. This exposes them to grave health risks and the danger of accidents,” he lamented.
He appealed to government, the District Chief Executive (DCE), and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to urgently step in and provide the school with a safe and hygienic facility.
Some pupils admitted they fear using the toilet entirely, with many resorting to relieving themselves in nearby bushes. This exposes them to further dangers, including snake bites and other environmental risks.
Hon. Sampson emphasized that immediate intervention is needed to avert a potential tragedy and protect the health, safety, and dignity of the children. He urged stakeholders in education, health, and sanitation to treat the matter as an emergency.
