The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has promoted 12,802 officers between January and the first week of February 2026, in a move aimed at clearing a backlog of delayed promotions within the Ghana Police Service. The promotions, covering ranks from Lance Corporal to Chief Inspector, include cases that had been pending for between five and ten years.

According to a statement from the IGP’s Secretariat, the exercise was conducted under the Police Service Regulations, 2012 (Constitutional Instrument 76), which stipulates that promotions are based on examinations, seniority, length of service, performance, and good conduct. Special recommendations were also considered for acts of bravery, crime prevention, or outstanding duty. The Secretariat dismissed allegations of nepotism, noting that promotion submissions came from unit, district, divisional, and regional commanders across all 25 police regions.

About 11,900 officers in lower ranks were promoted after exceeding the stipulated four-year period in rank, while roughly 600 were promoted through special recommendations. Several petitions were reviewed, including cases of officers previously interdicted and later acquitted, as well as corrections to promotion dates. Officers who died in the line of duty were also promoted posthumously following requests from their families.
