The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has cautioned customers to be on high alert against fraudsters posing as officials of the company and demanding payments through mobile money accounts for services such as meter installation, replacement, and debt cancellation.

According to Ing. George Amoah, General Manager of ECG in the Ashanti West Region, the company does not operate any mobile money account, and all official transactions are carried out strictly through ECG’s digital platforms. He emphasized that payments must be made via the ECG PowerApp or by dialing shortcode *226#, which guarantee safe and transparent transactions without extra charges.

He cited a recent case in which a customer was defrauded after sending GH¢900 for a meter and was subsequently asked to pay an additional GH¢500 for installation using a mobile money number provided by the scammers. The incident was later reported to ECG. Ing. Amoah expressed worry over the growing activities of such syndicates but assured that ECG, in collaboration with security agencies, is intensifying efforts to track and arrest the culprits. He urged customers to remain vigilant, avoid making payments outside official channels, and promptly report any suspicious demands to the nearest ECG office.
