Ayawaso East have more than 40,000 registered voters in the Constituency are expected to go to the polls on today to elect a new Member of Parliament in a by-election.
The exercise follows the death of the area’s Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure, in January 2026, which left the seat vacant.
The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has nominated Baba Ali as its parliamentary candidate after internal primaries, while the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has fielded former High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Jamal.
The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has assured residents of a smooth and credible voting process.
Mr Fred Tetteh, Director of Research at the EC, in an interview with the media on Monday, said the Commission had put in place the necessary logistical and security arrangements to ensure a peaceful poll.
He noted that the by-election, being parliamentary in nature, would be conducted under the first-past-the-post electoral system, where the candidate with the highest number of valid votes cast would be declared winner.
Mr Tetteh cautioned against electoral malpractices, particularly vote-buying, and warned that any proven case of fraud would attract sanctions in accordance with the law.
Security personnel have been deployed to polling stations across the constituency to maintain law and order throughout the voting process.
