National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has announced a three-day “thank-you tour” of the Eastern Region, scheduled for September 17–19, 2025. The program will cover 16 constituencies, with rallies and community engagements aimed at appreciating party executives, cadres, and grassroots members for their role in the party’s 2024 victory.
But the initiative has sparked internal controversy, with critics suggesting the tour is less about gratitude and more about positioning for a possible presidential bid in 2028. Some party insiders argue the move is politically suspicious, given that former President John Dramani Mahama only completed a nationwide thank-you tour in July this year.
Sources close to the Presidency have also raised concerns, describing the tour as ill-timed. They insist that government’s immediate priority should be stabilizing the economy and delivering on campaign promises, not fueling succession politics barely a year into office. “Chairman Nketia’s tour risks becoming a distraction,” one source warned.
Political analysts say the development highlights early jostling within the NDC over who succeeds Mahama in 2028. Asiedu Nketia, a long-time strategist and kingmaker, is increasingly being seen as a possible contender. The reception of his tour at the grassroots level, they note, will determine whether it strengthens his hand or deepens factional tensions in the party.
