6 dead, 5 in ICU, 12 in critical condition – GAF

The Ministry of Defence has confirmed that 34 persons were affected in the unfortunate incident that occurred at the El-Wak Stadium during the ongoing recruitment exercise. The casualties include potential recruits and other individuals who were not directly involved in the process.

According to official reports, six (6) persons have been confirmed dead, five (5) remain in critical condition and are receiving intensive care, while twelve (12) are described as fairly critical. The remaining victims are stable and under medical observation.

In light of these developments, the Ministry of Defence has suspended the recruitment exercise in the Greater Accra Region until further notice. Recruitment activities in other regions, however, are continuing smoothly under improved phased schedule arrangements to ensure safety and order.

The Ministry has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Armed Forces has set up an internal Board of Inquiry to investigate the cause of the stampede and to make recommendations to prevent future occurrences.

The Ministry further commended officers and health personnel at the 37 Military Hospital for their swift and dedicated response in managing the situation.

The public is assured that adequate safety measures have been instituted to safeguard the dignity and well-being of all applicants as the recruitment process continues nationwide.
