The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has formally notified Mr Umar Sanda Mohammed that he has automatically forfeited his membership of the party after filing to contest the Ayawaso East Constituency by-election as an independent candidate.
In a letter dated Tuesday, February 17, 2026, and signed by the General Secretary of the party, Mr Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the NDC said Mr Sanda’s decision was in direct contravention of the party’s constitution and its collective decision to field an officially elected candidate.
“By virtue of your decision to break ranks with the Party and contest against the officially endorsed candidate of the NDC, you have, in accordance with the provisions of the Party’s Constitution, automatically forfeited your membership of the Party with immediate effect,” the letter stated.
The party further cautioned Mr Sanda against using any property or paraphernalia associated with the NDC in his campaign.
“You are hereby formally notified that you are prohibited from using the Party’s name, logo, colours, insignia, symbols, or any other intellectual property or paraphernalia associated with the Party in the course of your campaign or any related political activity,” the letter added.
The Ayawaso East Constituency by-election is scheduled for March 3, 2026.
It was necessitated by the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Mr Mahama Naser Toure, on January 4, 2026.
The Electoral Commission has cleared five candidates to contest the seat, including the NDC’s officially endorsed candidate, Mr Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, and Mr Umar Sanda Mohammed, who is running as an independent candidate.
Candidates from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) have also been cleared to contest.
