Traders at the Adum Blue Light Arena in the Ashanti Region have dismantled a fence erected by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), which they say was blocking access to their market stalls.
According to the traders, they arrived at the market on Thursday, April 24, to find it cordoned off with roofing sheets, preventing them from entering.
In a bold act of defiance, market women many dressed in red ignored the presence of military officers and tore down the barrier in protest. They accused the KMA of attempting to take over the land under the guise of reconstruction.
Abena Nsowaa, the market queen mother, declared that traders would continue to remove any barricades that obstruct access to the market.
“If KMA handles the reconstruction, we’ll lose out on store allocations,” she cautioned.
Despite warnings from the KMA, the traders have resumed their activities, setting up tables and selling goods on the market grounds.
Meanwhile, some private developers have begun rebuilding a three-storey structure that was destroyed in an earlier fire.
