The Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has revealed that the government has disbursed GH¢5 billion to road contractors as part of efforts to settle long-standing debts in the sector.

Mr. Agbodza stated that the payment was made without resorting to foreign borrowing, reflecting the government’s commitment to fiscal discipline.

He explained that the disbursement followed a comprehensive verification exercise carried out by the Ministry of Finance in collaboration with the Auditor-General’s Department, to authenticate all legitimate claims before releasing funds.

According to the Minister, the government inherited approximately GH¢40 billion in outstanding liabilities within the road sector comprising GH¢21 billion owed under the Government of Ghana account, over GH¢8 billion under the Road Fund, and additional arrears related to Cocoa Roads projects.

Mr. Agbodza emphasized that, although it is impossible to clear the entire debt in a single year, the government remains committed to systematically paying contractors to restore confidence and ensure the completion of critical road projects nationwide.
