The Ministry of Education has assured that more than 3,200 teachers who have worked for nearly ten months without pay will soon receive their outstanding salaries.
Speaking at the launch of the ADEA Triennale on Education Conference, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu disclosed that Cabinet has given approval for the payment of the delayed salaries, which affect newly recruited teachers from Colleges of Education and universities.
The Minister also announced plans to implement an equity distribution programme that will see some Category B schools upgraded to Category A status. According to him, this initiative aims to ease the persistent placement challenges faced by students who struggle to secure admission into top-tier schools.
Mr. Iddrisu, however, emphasized that the successful rollout of the initiative would depend on adequate budgetary allocation to support infrastructure expansion in the selected schools.
This assurance comes after the Coalition of Unpaid Teachers, comprising graduates from various Colleges of Education and universities, petitioned the Ministries of Education and Finance on September 30 over 13 months of salary arrears.
Following the petition, Mr. Iddrisu pledged that his ministry, in collaboration with the Finance Ministry, would present a joint memorandum to the Cabinet to resolve the issue a promise that appears to be yielding results.
