The Upper Denkyira East District Police Commander, DSP Simon Boavo, has appealed to Denkyirahene, Nana Odeefuor Boa Amponsem IV, to place a ban on the carrying, brandishing and display of firearms at public gatherings across Denkyira.
According to the District Police Commander, the growing practice of wielding guns during funerals, festivals, outdoorings and enstoolment ceremonies poses a serious threat to public safety and peace within the traditional area.
Speaking in an interview on Denkyiraman Radio in reaction to the tragic death of Ayanfuri Mmratehene, Nana Kwabena Okyere, who had mistakenly discharged a pump-action gun during the funeral of Abusua Panyin Akwasi Kwateng at Ayanfuri, DSP Simon Boavo noted that although some individuals may legally own licensed firearms, the indiscriminate display and firing of such weapons in public remain dangerous and could result in accidental shootings, injuries and loss of lives.
He stressed that the Police Service is deeply concerned about the increasing abuse of firearms at social events and believes a directive from the Paramount Chief would help curb the situation and protect innocent residents.
DSP Simon Boavo therefore appealed to Odeefuor Boa Amponsem IV and traditional authorities within Denkyira to support the police by enforcing strict measures against the carrying and use of firearms during funerals and the installation of chiefs.
He further urged the youth to refrain from using guns to display power, prestige or excitement at public functions, emphasizing that peace and security should remain the collective responsibility of all citizens.
