Fifteen people among them eleven children aged between two and fourteen have lost their lives in a devastating boat accident on the Volta Lake near Kete Krachi in the Oti Region.
The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), confirming the incident in a statement on Sunday, October 12, said the tragedy occurred on Saturday, October 11, when an overloaded boat capsized mid-journey. Four adults were among the deceased, while four others were rescued.
Describing the event as “deeply heartbreaking,” the Authority extended its condolences to the affected families and the Kete Krachi community.
The GMA further appealed to the public to prioritize safety when using water transport by refusing to board vessels that are clearly overloaded or lack adequate life jackets. “Your decision could prevent another tragedy and save a child’s life,” the statement emphasized.
The Authority reiterated its commitment to improving safety standards and enforcing regulations across all inland waterways to prevent similar occurrences.
