A traditional leader at Ayanfuri in the Diaso District of the Dunkwa-On-Offin Division has died after reportedly shooting himself accidentally during a funeral ceremony.
The deceased, identified as Nana Kwabena Okyere, the Mmratehene of the Ayanfuri Traditional Area, sustained a gunshot wound while attending the funeral of Abusua Panyin Akwasi Kwateng on Saturday.
Police information indicated that at about 1520 hours, Chief Inspector Peter Sadaari, Station Officer at the Ayanfuri Police Station, received a distress call that Nana Okyere had mistakenly discharged a pump-action gun during the ceremony.
He was rushed to the Ayanfuri Pentecost Hospital for treatment.
Chief Inspector Sadaari, together with Detective Inspector Agines Amissah, visited the hospital where medical officers confirmed that the victim had suffered a severe gunshot wound to the abdomen, with parts of his intestines exposed.
He, however, died while receiving treatment.
The body was later conveyed to the Dunkwa-On-Offin Municipal Hospital mortuary pending autopsy.
Police said investigations were underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Meanwhile, a video circulating on social media allegedly showed the deceased handling the pump-action gun moments before the incident occurred.
