Three people have been confirmed dead, while 20 others have been rescued following the collapse of an uncompleted four-storey building near the Experimental D/A School at Accra Newtown.

The incident occurred on Sunday, March 29, 2026, when a group of worshippers had gathered inside the structure, reportedly converted into a makeshift church. The collapse triggered panic in the area and prompted a swift emergency response.

According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the incident was reported at 5:01 p.m., with the first and second rescue teams from the National Headquarters arriving at 5:17 p.m. and 5:19 p.m., respectively, to begin search and rescue operations.

Initial reports indicated that several persons were trapped beneath the rubble. In all, 23 individuals comprising 15 females and eight males, including three minors were caught in the collapse.

Through coordinated efforts by GNFS personnel, other emergency agencies, and local residents, 20 victims were successfully rescued and transported to various health facilities for treatment.

However, three people two females and one male lost their lives. Their bodies have been handed over to the police for preservation and further investigation.

Earlier, GNFS Public Relations Officer, Alex King Nartey, indicated that rescue teams were relying on faint cries from beneath the debris to locate survivors.

“Rescue mission is still ongoing. The voices are growing fainter because our officers are relying on people calling for help to trace where people are. For now, people are still down there. We are not sure of the number,” he said at the time.

Rescue and security teams remain at the scene to complete debris clearing and ensure safety, while authorities are expected to launch a full investigation into the cause of the collapse.

The incident has renewed concerns about the structural integrity of uncompleted and abandoned buildings being used for public activities.

The GNFS commended its personnel and partner agencies for their swift response and professionalism, noting that their efforts significantly contributed to saving lives.

“Our deepest condolences go to the bereaved families, and we wish the injured a speedy recovery,” the Service said.
