The candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Baba Jamal Ahmed, has won the Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election, polling 10,884 votes.
The by-election was held following the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Mahama Toure, which created a vacancy in the constituency.
Official results indicate that Baba Ali garnered 4,009 votes, while Independent candidate Umar Sanda secured 1,885 votes. Another Independent candidate, Mr David Kanor, obtained 107 votes, with Mr Ibrahim Idrissu of the LPG polling 43 votes.
In all, 17,048 ballots were cast across 113 polling stations, with 120 rejected votes recorded.
The exercise was characterised by relatively low voter turnout, which party officials and some observers attributed to the ongoing Ramadan fasting period, given that Ayawaso East is a predominantly Muslim constituency.
Prior to the election, President John Dramani Mahama had recalled Mr Baba Jamal Ahmed from his position as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, paving the way for his participation in the by-election.
Mr Ahmed’s victory ensures that the NDC retains the Ayawaso East parliamentary seat following the tenure of the late Mahama Toure.
