Parliament has unanimously passed the MahamaCares Bill, officially known as the Ghana Medical Trust Fund Bill, 2025, aimed at strengthening the country’s healthcare financing system.
The legislation establishes a dedicated fund to support critical medical interventions, emergency care, and the treatment of underprivileged patients who are unable to afford quality healthcare.
The Fund will be financed through multiple sources, including a dedicated allocation from the national budget, voluntary contributions from individuals and organizations, and donor support. Its goal is to provide financial relief to Ghanaians who fall through the cracks of the existing National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
The bill outlines a clear governance framework, including the appointment of a Board of Trustees to oversee operations, ensure transparency, and prevent the misapplication of resources.
The Ghana Medical Trust Fund is expected to become operational in the coming months, pending presidential assent and the formation of the required administrative structures. This development is anticipated to significantly improve healthcare access for vulnerable populations across the country.
