A female police officer on duty at Wassa Ateiku in the Wassa East District of the Western Region narrowly escaped injury after a gunshot was fired in her direction during a traditional ceremony.
The alarming incident occurred during a customary ritual performed by a local clan to mark 40 days after the passing of their Abusuapanin.
According to the Wassa East District Police Commander, ASP Yahaya Salifu, the officer was stationed at a checkpoint near a stream around 9:30 a.m. when the group approached the area to conduct their rites.
ASP Salifu explained that in the course of the ceremony, a gun unexpectedly discharged. The bullet travelled toward the checkpoint, piercing through a barricade. It was stopped only by a tricycle and a motorbike parked nearby an obstruction he believes prevented the officer from being hit.
Although the officer was left visibly shaken, she escaped the ordeal without injury.
