A devastating midnight fire has left a 45-year-old single mother of four, Afia Nsowaa, and her children homeless, after flames destroyed their property at Assin Dansame in the Assin North District of the Central Region.
The fire broke out around 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday, originating from a storeroom that also served as the family’s kitchen. The blaze quickly spread, consuming everything in its path including clothing, school uniforms, cooking utensils, and a sum of money. By the time neighbours arrived, it was too late.
Miraculously, no lives were lost, but the emotional and material toll has been devastating.
“All I could do was watch everything burn,” Afia said tearfully. “My children have lost everything even their school things. We don’t know where to start.”
Afia and her children had been living temporarily in an uncompleted building nearby, storing their limited belongings in the now destroyed storeroom. The arrangement, made in hopes of protecting their possessions, has now left them with nothing.
The family is currently sleeping wherever they can find shelter, relying on the kindness of neighbours for food and basic necessities.
Hon. Mark Nti Ballack, Assembly Member for the area and Presiding Member of the Assin North District Assembly, described the incident as “heart-wrenching” and made a public appeal for support from individuals, NGOs, and charitable organizations.
Officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), led by District Coordinator Mr. Edward Fireson, have visited the site and are working on providing emergency relief items. He also urged community members to take fire safety precautions seriously to avoid similar tragedies.
As Afia and her four children face an uncertain future, their hope now lies in community solidarity and compassionate support.
