President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled a nationwide programme to revitalise Ghana’s poultry industry through large-scale local production.

Launching the Nkoko Nketenkete Poultry Farm-to-Table Project on Wednesday, November 12, President Mahama said the initiative would directly support 50 anchor farmers across the country. Each will receive 80,000 birds, as well as housing, logistics, and technical assistance to enhance production efficiency.

The project aims to produce over four million birds annually, stimulating local feed demand, creating jobs, and strengthening market links between producers and processors.

“For too long, Ghana’s poultry industry once a lively contributor to rural incomes and national nutrition has faced challenges such as high feed costs, limited access to improved breeds, and overreliance on imports,” President Mahama said.

He revealed that Ghana spent over $350 million in 2023 on imported poultry products, calling it “a drain on foreign exchange and a missed opportunity for farmers and entrepreneurs.”

The President urged Ghanaians to “consume what we ourselves grow,” noting that the project forms part of his broader agricultural transformation agenda to empower farmers, enhance food security, and promote sustainable livelihoods.
