The Commercial National Okada Riders Union has expressed frustration over government’s prolonged delay in legalising commercial motorcycle operations in Ghana.

According to the Union, the delay is negatively affecting the livelihoods of thousands of riders across the country and exposing them to frequent police harassment and arrests.

President of the Union, Mohammed Tijani, noted that despite repeated assurances from government to regularise the operations of okada riders, no concrete action has been taken so far.

Speaking to journalists on Sunday, Mr. Tijani lamented that many riders are struggling to make ends meet as a large portion of their meagre daily earnings is often lost through alleged police extortion.

He added that even riders who possess valid licences and roadworthy certificates are not spared the constant intimidation and harassment.

The Union is therefore appealing to government to expedite the passage of the proposed legislation to regulate okada operations, ensure safety compliance, and provide a fair working environment for all riders.
