A High Court in Sekondi has lifted the restraining order against Joana Gyan Cudjoe, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for Amenfi Central.
The injunction had previously barred Joana Cudjoe from contesting in the upcoming parliamentary election scheduled for December 7. Today’s ruling follows an earlier adjournment of the case, during which the NDC requested the court to lift the injunction against their candidate and dismiss the underlying disqualification.
This recent development comes a few weeks after an Accra High Court dismissed an earlier application by the NDC, which sought to restrain the Electoral Commission (EC) from printing ballots and issuing the notice of poll in defense of Cudjoe’s eligibility.
With the lifting of the injunction, the EC can now proceed with printing ballot papers and logistics, including Joana Cudjoe’s name.
After the court proceedings, Edudzi Tamakloe, the lawyer representing the first defendant, urged the EC to comply with the court’s directive. “We are very pleased and would like to thank the court. The EC representative was present, and he is aware that the court has vacated the injunction. Now that the injunction has been lifted, Madam Jean Mensa should do the right thing,” he stated.
Following the ruling, Joana Gyan Cudjoe expressed her relief and joy, feeling that a burden had been lifted from her shoulders. She encouraged her supporters to intensify their campaign efforts to secure her victory on December 7.
“I’m incredibly grateful. I thank God and the party for stepping in to support me today. I’m coming home, and we’re going to prepare for our campaign,” she said.
