The Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has announced that the contentious Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, also known as the anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, will be introduced for its first reading during the second meeting of the Ninth Parliament.
This bill aims to criminalize LGBTQ+ activities, including advocacy, promotion, and financial support, in Ghana.
Individuals engaging in LGBTQ+ activities could face imprisonment ranging from six months to three years.
Also those promoting or sponsoring LGBTQ+ activities could be sentenced to three to five years in jail.
The bill also focuses on protecting children from LGBTQ+ activities and providing support for victims.
The bill was previously passed by the Eighth Parliament but didn’t become law after former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo refused to assent to it.
Parliament is set to begin deliberations on the bill, which remains a highly polarizing issue in Ghana.
