Members of Parliament have renewed calls for urgent and lasting measures to address the recurring flooding that continues to affect communities across the country.

The Second Deputy Minority Whip and MP for Jerry Ahmed Shaib, together with the MP for Isaac Yaw Boamah-Nyarko, raised concerns on the floor of Parliament over what they described as the growing threat posed by annual flooding.

The legislators observed that floods continue to wreak havoc in several parts of the country, leading to fatalities, damage to homes and infrastructure, and significant disruptions to businesses and livelihoods.

They argued that the country’s response to flooding must move beyond short-term interventions and emergency relief efforts, advocating instead for comprehensive and sustainable strategies that tackle the underlying causes of the problem.

According to the MPs, effective flood control requires stronger enforcement of planning regulations, improved drainage infrastructure, and greater attention to environmental management.

They further urged government institutions and Parliament to strengthen oversight mechanisms to ensure that policies and projects aimed at mitigating floods are properly implemented and monitored.

The lawmakers also stressed the need for future developments to be guided by sound urban planning principles, with adequate drainage systems and environmental safeguards incorporated into all construction projects.

They maintained that a coordinated national approach involving government agencies, local authorities, and communities is critical to reducing the devastating impact of floods and safeguarding lives and property.

The call comes as concerns continue to mount over the increasing incidence of flooding in various parts of the country following periods of heavy rainfall.
