On Monday, September 29, 2025, in the historic town of Jukwa, the heartbeat of Denkyira’s royal heritage drums thundered, horns blew, and the air filled with joy as the Denkyira Traditional Council nominated Mr. Kwame Mensah Oscar Kessie as the 26th Denkyirahene.
It was more than a royal declaration; it was a rebirth. For nearly nine years, Denkyira had awaited a new custodian of its heritage following the passing of Odeefo Boa Amponsem III in 2016. On this day, history met destiny.
Kwame Mensah, affectionately called Oscar Kessie, is not merely a man chosen for leadership he is a son of Denkyira’s sacred bloodline. Born on July 24, 1955, to Obaapanin Akosua Baba Safori of the Agona Gyadua Pomaase family of Jukwa, his ancestry stretches deep into Denkyira’s royal matrilineal line.
His mother, Akosua Baba Safori, was the only sister of the late Odeefo Boa Amponsem III, one of the longest-reigning kings of Denkyira. His cousin, Nana Ama Ayensua Saara III, is the current Denkyirahemaa. His lineage further traces back to the legendary matriarch Nana Yaa Mbrah, through whose line many of Denkyira’s rulers emerged. Thus, his nomination is not merely a matter of succession it is the continuation of a sacred covenant between the royal family and the people.
Kwame Mensah’s journey is a story of vision, resilience, and leadership that bridges the traditional and modern worlds. His early education began at Jukwa Local Authority Middle School, continued at Dunkwa Secondary School, and later at Cape Coast Workers’ College, where he completed his Advanced Level studies in 1979.
Pursuing higher learning, he earned qualifications in Journalism and Marketing, a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, and an Honorary Degree in Leadership and Sustainable Fisheries from the University of Rhode Island, USA. Today, he continues to sharpen his leadership credentials with a Master’s in Chieftaincy Affairs.
His professional life reflects a deep commitment to service and transformation. As Managing Director of Osthena Fishing Company and later Nasaaa Fishing Company, he created more than 2,000 jobs across three regions.
His entrepreneurial vision gave birth to Bankam Guest House offering hospitality in Jukwa, Osfresh Drinking Water providing clean, safe water, and Bankam Radio (95.1 FM) a community voice amplifying culture and information. Through these ventures, Kwame Mensah has shown that leadership is not only about lineage; it is about legacy.
Away from business, he has been a pillar of faith. As a retired Elder of the Christ Apostolic Church International, Odorkor Assembly, his life has been anchored in humility, service, and devotion to God. His seat on multiple boards and institutions demonstrates his ability to blend spiritual values with practical leadership.
His nomination comes at a defining moment. Like many traditional states in Ghana, Denkyira faces challenges of youth unemployment, cultural preservation, modernization pressures, and economic empowerment.
Kwame Mensah embodies the answer: a royal with global exposure, business acumen, and cultural grounding. The 21-day period of confinement he now undergoes is not merely tradition it symbolizes preparation, reflection, and the spiritual equipping of a leader who must carry both history and destiny.
The jubilant scenes in Jukwa on nomination day were not only about a king ascending a throne. They reflected a kingdom rekindled, a people reconnected with their heritage, and a renewed confidence in leadership that understands both the sacredness of tradition and the urgency of progress.
When he is finally enstooled in October 2025, Denkyira will not only celebrate a king—it will embrace a vision. A vision where culture thrives, communities flourish, and leadership inspires.
The story of Kwame Mensah Oscar Kessie is one of continuity and transformation. From royal blood to modern leadership, from local entrepreneurship to international recognition, his life embodies a timeless truth: a true king is not born for himself but for his people.
For Denkyira, this is not just the installation of the 26th Denkyirahene. It is the dawn of a new era.
Denkyirafoɔ, yɛn hene aba! People of Denkyira, our king has come!
Long Live Denkyira. Long Live Our King.
