Kwame Mensah Ascends as 26th Denkyirahene: A Life of Royal Heritage and Community Service

Kwame Mensah, affectionately known as Oscar Kessie, embodies the enduring spirit of leadership and service within the historic Denkyira Kingdom. Born on July 24, 1955, he hails from the Denkyira Agona Gyadua Pomaase family of Jukwa, a royal lineage that links him directly to generations of distinguished rulers.

His mother, Obaapanin Akosua Baba Safori, was the only sister of the late Odeefuo Boa Amponsem III, Denkyirahene. Through her, Kwame traces his ancestry to illustrious royals including Nana Kojo Tsibu II (Denkyirahene, 1919–1930), Nana Saara I (Denkyirahemaa), and ultimately to Nana Yaa Mbrah, one of the matriarchs of the Denkyira stool. This deep heritage places him firmly within the historic succession of leaders who have shaped Denkyira’s destiny.

Education and Professional Journey

Kwame Mensah began his education at Jukwa Local Authority Middle School, earning his Elementary School Certificate in 1971. That same year, his uncle Odeefuo Boa Amponsem III enrolled him at Dunkwa Secondary School, where he completed in 1976. He went on to earn his Advanced Level Certificate in 1979 at Cape Coast Workers’ College.

In 1982, he obtained a Certificate in Journalism and Marketing from the School of Journalism in Accra. His passion for knowledge led him to further studies, earning both a Certificate and an Honorary Degree in Leadership and Sustainable Fisheries from the University of Rhode Island, USA, a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration (Management Option), and he is currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Chieftaincy Affairs with City University, Cambodia, through distance learning.

He is also a proud member of the Institute of Certified Business Analysts and Consultants and the Project Management Professionals Ghana, reflecting a lifelong commitment to academic and professional excellence.

Entrepreneurial Achievements

A seasoned entrepreneur, Kwame Mensah has managed and founded several thriving businesses that have created jobs and transformed communities. In 2002, he managed Osthena Fishing Company Limited, an industrial fishing trawling enterprise, and was appointed Managing Director of Nasaaa Fishing Company Limited, both of which operated across three regions and employed over 2,000 people.

Determined to spur local development, he established Bankam Guest House to provide quality hospitality services in Jukwa, Osfresh Drinking Water to supply safe and hygienic sachet water, and Bankam Radio (95.1 FM) to improve information flow and community engagement throughout Lower Denkyira.

Service and Faith

Beyond business, Kwame Mensah is a retired Elder of the Christ Apostolic Church International (CACI) Odorkor Assembly in Accra, where he continues to play advisory roles. He serves on several boards and institutions, using his expertise to guide social and economic initiatives.

A New Era for Denkyira

Married with children, Kwame Mensah’s life reflects a balance of royal heritage, education, entrepreneurship, and faith. On Monday, September 29, 2025, he was nominated as the 26th King of Denkyira, marking the beginning of a new era of unity and development for the kingdom. His enthronement fulfills a lineage of leadership and signals a renewed commitment to the cultural heritage and progress of Denkyira.
