On August 29th and 30th, Member of Parliament for the Abetifi Constituency and former minister of food and agriculture, Hon. Dr. Bryan Acheampong, met with women executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at the Rock City Hotel in the Eastern Region. The engagement served as a platform to listen to the concerns of women in the party and outline his vision for unity, rebuilding and inclusion within the party in light of his 2028 presidential ambitions.
During the meeting, Dr. Acheampong shared a moving personal story, recounting his upbringing as the eldest son of a single mother, who was also a teacher. He reflected on her unwavering discipline and sacrifices in raising three children, often moving between boys’ quarters in Achimota Mile 7. Despite these challenges, she ensured their well-being, proper training, and guidance.
Drawing from his mother’s story, Dr. Acheampong highlighted the critical importance of equipping women and mothers with the resources to thrive. He expressed a deep understanding of the unique sacrifices women make for their children, families and communities, which often go unnoticed. Viewing their empowerment as essential for transformative change within both the party and the nation, he pledged an unwavering commitment to ensuring women are central to the political agenda and are never forgotten.
He firmly stated: ‘I know what a single mother has done and I don’t intend to shortchange the women and mothers in our organization, and Ghana at large.’
In addition, he recognized the foundational support of the Presbyterian Church in his personal and moral development, emphasizing its role in providing spiritual guidance and structure during his formative years.
He also detailed, ‘She had to hand me over to the Presbyterian Church. I never had a father figure at home, and so the elders of the Presbyterian Church are all my fathers.’ This gratitude and connection made hosting the Church’s General Assembly at Rock City a truly personal point of pride, as he acknowledged, ‘For me, that is where my protection has come from.’
The engagement reinforced his commitment to ensuring that women remain at the heart of the NPP’s agenda and national development efforts.
