Police pick up 39-year-old suspect in relation to UCC student’s death

A suspect has been picked up by the police in relation to the death of the University of Cape Coast student, Innocentia Atsufui Avinu.

Named by the police as 39-year-old Michael Mensah, he has been arrested in relation to an accusation of murder.

The suspect was arrested by the Inspector General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team on Monday, June 15, 2026, at about 7:15 pm at the Pedu Lorry Station in Cape Coast.

According to the police, the move followed a sustained intelligence-led operation.

Preliminary police investigation has revealed that on June 11, 2026, at about 6:48 pm, the suspect who claims to be a teacher by profession but also works as a driver, picked the deceased from Ayensu Plaza within the University of Cape Coast (UCC) hostel enclave and took her to Hutchland Beach, where she was last seen.

Investigations are continuing, and any further development will be duly communicated, the police indicated.

Her body was discovered at the Hutchland Beach area, near Duakor, in Cape Coast, about 12 hours after she was last seen by her hostel roommate.

According to the roommate, with whom she resided at a private hostel at Amamoma, a nearby community, Innocentia received a phone call, dressed casually, and left the room at about 7 pm on June 11, 2026.

She also indicated that her colleagues became concerned when Innocentia did not return; consequently, efforts were made to trace her whereabouts throughout the following day, but these attempts proved unsuccessful.

Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, was a Level 200 Bachelor of Commerce (Human Resource) student.
