The New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate in the recently concluded Akwatia by-election, Hon. Solomon Kwame Asumadu, has dismissed allegations made by his opponent, Hon. Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), that internal division and dissatisfaction among NPP members led to their defeat.
In a response to the NDC candidate’s post-election remarks, Hon. Asumadu firmly denied any suggestion that the party was in disarray or that members were “outraged” over the selection process.
“Those claims are unfounded. The NPP remains united and committed to democratic principles. While we didn’t secure victory this time, I’m not discouraged by the outcome,” he said in an interview.
Hon. Asumadu also expressed optimism about the party’s future in Akwatia, stating that the NPP would work strategically to reclaim the parliamentary seat in the 2028 general elections.
“We respect the will of the people, but this is not the end. We’re going back to the drawing board, and come 2028, the NPP will return stronger,” he added.
The Akwatia by-election, held to fill a vacant parliamentary seat, was seen as a critical test for both major parties.
The NDC’s victory has sparked a renewed focus on internal party unity and electoral strategy as Ghana heads toward the next national polls.
