Dr. Isaac of Fountain View Faith Hospital in Dunkwa-On-Offin has cautioned the public about the dangers of consuming smoked foods and prolonged exposure to smoke, stressing that such habits can cause serious health complications beyond lung cancer.
Speaking on Denkyiraman Radio’s National Agenda program, Dr. Isaac explained that not only cigarette smokers are at risk. According to him, people who frequently consume smoked meats and fish, residents living near refuse dumps, and individuals exposed to smoke in their daily environment are also vulnerable to heart and liver problems.
He advised non-smokers who fall into these categories to undergo regular medical checkups to safeguard their health.
“Someone might ask about the best way to grill meat and fish. I recommend using charcoal and grilling lightly so the nutrients remain intact. Some think gas grilling is safer because it produces less smoke, but that method can actually be more harmful,” he cautioned.
Dr. Isaac further explained that the health effects vary depending on the source of smoke, but emphasized that even small amounts of smoke inhaled over time accumulate and pose significant health risks. He also urged smokers to seek medical attention promptly if they notice any signs of heart disease, adding that early intervention is critical for effective treatment.
