“GUM Leader: 99% of Ghanaians Are Corrupt, Third Force Not Possible

Christian Kwabena Andrews, popularly known as Sofo Kyereabosom and leader of the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), has expressed deep skepticism about the viability of forming a strong third political force in Ghana.

Speaking on National Agenda on Denkyiraman Radio, he claimed that around 99% of Ghanaians, including some religious leaders and traditional chiefs, are corrupt, which undermines any effort to establish a credible alternative to the dominant political parties.

According to him, unless the mindset of the average Ghanaian changes, the idea of a third force will remain a dream.

“If President John Dramani Mahama is unable to put us on the right path, democracy will never help us in Ghana,” he said.

“If President Ibrahim Traoré of Burkina Faso had contested an election, people would have doubted his competence and he might have lost—but he’s doing exceptionally well now.”

Mr. Andrews argued that self-interest dominates Ghanaian politics, stating,

“Everyone is fighting for their personal gain, not for the country.”

He warned that if the current government veers off the path set by the Mahama administration, it could further compromise democracy and endanger the nation’s future.

The GUM leader emphasized that his own survey findings show no real support for a third force, and said Ghanaians lack an understanding of genuine governance.

“I will not align with any political party until I see seriousness and honesty from these corrupt leaders. However, if a party like the NDC chooses to do the right thing, we will support them,” he added.

He also took a swipe at religious leaders:

“Most pastors in this country are corrupt. They care more about feeding themselves than the welfare of the people. They should have supported me, but they clearly don’t have the interest of the country at heart.”
