The Ghanaian government is set to announce a new cocoa producer price today, August 4, 2025, ahead of the 2025/2026 crop season, which begins on August 7.
There is speculation that the new price could be significantly higher in dollar terms potentially around GH¢3,300 per 64kg bag, or approximately $319. This anticipated increase is largely attributed to the Ghanaian cedi’s 42% appreciation against the US dollar so far this year. However, the real impact in cedi terms remains uncertain due to the currency’s sharp recent gains.
Currently, cocoa farmers receive GH¢3,100 per 64kg bag and GH¢49,600 per tonne.
President John Mahama has reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring that cocoa farmers receive at least 70% of the world market price. Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson is expected to announce the new price later today.
Speaking to the media, Chief Executive of COCOBOD, Dr. Randy Abbey, expressed concern that the cedi’s appreciation could reduce farmers’ real earnings.
“What we are seeing now is a situation where global prices are high, and that would normally translate into higher incomes for our farmers.
But with the cedi appreciating sharply, the gains could be reduced when translated into Ghana cedis,” Dr. Abbey said.
