Member of Parliament for Old Tafo in the Ashanti Region, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has raised alarm over growing insecurity in the region, warning that violence linked to the Bawku conflict is endangering the lives of residents.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, Mr. Assafuah expressed deep concern over rising incidents of violence many of which, he claimed, go unreported including killings and mysterious disappearances.
“Our people are living in fear, and if the government doesn’t act, the situation will escalate,” he warned.
He cited several disturbing incidents to support his claims, including the discovery of a six-year-old girl’s body in a parked vehicle at Suame Market, and a recent killing in Asawase.
The MP also referenced the tragic death of Peggy Ayelbassah, an aspiring nurse who was fatally shot while traveling to Salaga.
Mr. Assafuah further linked the recent assassination of a Kusasi chief in Asawase to the ongoing Bawku conflict, suggesting that the violence is beginning to spill over into parts of the Ashanti Region.
In response to the escalating tensions, the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has introduced new measures: banning the wearing of smocks by motorbike riders and restricting motorcycle use in Asawase after 7:00 p.m., as part of efforts to curb violence and restore calm.
