The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has urged the government to prioritise local investors in the allocation of mining concessions before considering partnerships with foreign companies.

He made the call during a meeting with officials from the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the Minerals Commission at the Manhyia Palace.

The engagement focused on a proposed review of Ghana’s Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703), aimed at improving sector governance and enhancing the involvement of traditional authorities in mining.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II stressed that empowering Ghanaian investors would strengthen the local economy and stabilise the national currency.

He suggested that local investors could raise capital by listing on the stock exchange to acquire mining equipment, creating opportunities for young people to invest and earn returns.

Ghana is a significant mineral producer, and the mining sector contributes substantially to the country’s economy. The Asantehene also clarified aspects of the legal framework governing mining concessions and called for policy changes to support indigenous participation.

His appeal aims to ensure that Ghanaians benefit directly from the nation’s mineral wealth.
