President John Dramani Mahama has hinted that Ghana may soon transition from appointing Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to electing them, as part of broader constitutional reforms aimed at strengthening local democracy and accountability.

Speaking at a meeting with MMDCEs in Accra, President Mahama suggested that the current batch of appointees could be the last under the existing system.

He emphasized that public sentiment overwhelmingly favors the election of MMDCEs a view that prominently featured in the national consultations conducted by the Constitution Review Commission.

The President encouraged current MMDCEs to deepen collaboration with traditional authorities, religious leaders, civil society groups, and other local stakeholders to advance effective governance and drive community development.

He concluded by stressing that the legitimacy and authority of the state must be reflected in the daily experiences of citizens at the local level.
