The Trade Union Congress (TUC) amid the workers Day Celebration at the Black Star Square on May 1, noted that Ghanaian workers cannot be a part in the national reset while wages remain low and working conditions continue to deteriorate.

Speaking at during the celebration in Accra, the Chairman of TUC Bernard Owusu, stressed the urgent need for improvement in workers’ remuneration and welfare, stating the wage situation has worsened since the president last held office.

“Our wages and working conditions are getting worse. The situation has deteriorated further since you were in power,’ Mr Owusu cried out.”

According to Mr Owusu, the surge in inflation over four years has led to a sharp decline in real wages, making it harder for workers to afford basic needs, with inequality worsening in both sectors.

He further criticized the pension system, citing the vast disparity between the lowest monthly pension of GH¢396.58 and the highest of GH¢21,792.73, saying it’s far from workers’ expectations.

The chairman highlighted workers’ rights issues, noting that many face threats and potential dismissal for trying to form or join unions.

“Our Asogli brothers are still on strike; we plead with the president to bring them back to the workplace,’ he said.”

Additionally, he expressed worry about mass terminations, noting that similar moves under the previous government caused significant hardship for many workers.

“As we reset governance, we must avoid the pitfalls of the past and create a brighter future for workers,’ he emphasized.”

Mr. Bernard Owusu called on President Mahama to implement a living wage, streamline public sector compensation, and establish an independent body to oversee pay and pensions.
