The Ghana Education Service (GES) has authorized a thorough search of students’ luggage in Senior High Schools across the country.

The searches uncovered dangerous weapons and unauthorized items hidden in students’ belongings. This move comes after a recent classroom shooting incident, where a student was shot by a fellow student using a locally-made pistol.

Rev. Father Stephen Owusu Sekyere, President of the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), disclosed that items such as pinch bars, pliers, scissors, and daggers were discovered in the bags of students nationwide.

“We appreciate the Ghana Education Service for authorizing us to conduct these searches. In the past, we risked being accused of violating students’ rights,” he said.

CHASS is urging parents to take an active interest in what their children send to school. According to Rev. Father Owusu Sekyere, disciplinary actions will be taken against any student found carrying prohibited items.

Some students are already facing disciplinary committees for violating school rules during the ongoing searches. The CHASS president reaffirmed their commitment to strictly enforce the school Code of Conduct.
