The former Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, has applied to the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice for a seven-day extension to enable her file a reply to the Republic of Ghana’s Statement of Defence in a case challenging her removal from office.
The request follows the Court’s adoption of Ghana’s Amended Statement of Defence after granting an oral application for extension of time.
On January 30, 2026, the Court granted Madam Torkornoo leave to amend her application to effectively challenge both her suspension and subsequent removal as Chief Justice.
The Court subsequently directed the Republic of Ghana to file its amended Statement of Defence within 30 days, should it opt to do so.
When the case was called on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, the Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem-Sai, moved an oral motion seeking extension of time to file the Republic’s Statement of Defence, citing circumstances beyond their control for the delay.
Counsel for Madam Torkornoo, Femi Falana, did not oppose the application.
