Despite a reduction in LPG prices driven by the appreciation of the cedi, the Upper Denkyira East Municipal Assembly has agreed with the Dunkwa Town Runners Association to maintain existing transport fares.
Speaking on National Agenda on Denkyiraman Radio, the President of the Dunkwa Town Runners Association said the decision was made with the interest of passengers in mind.
He explained that although previous fare increases in 2019 and 2023 were supposed to include additional coin charges, drivers had waived them as a gesture of goodwill to passengers.
Two key reasons were cited for maintaining current fares: the poor condition of some town roads and the lack of a corresponding drop in general fuel prices.
He emphasized that the decision strikes a balance between protecting drivers’ livelihoods and avoiding unnecessary burden on passengers.
Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. George Anane Coleman, confirmed on Denkyiraman Radio that the Assembly supports the drivers’ position, acknowledging the justification provided during stakeholder discussions.
According to the MCE, the existing fare structure will remain in place, despite a nationwide reduction in transport fares. However, he stressed that any future fare increases must be justified and thoroughly discussed before approval.
