The Upper Denkyira East Police Command has extended the ongoing gun amnesty exercise following a low public response.
The exercise, which allows residents to voluntarily surrender unregistered firearms without facing prosecution, has so far resulted in the retrieval of two weapons.
The Police Command has therefore extended the deadline to January 31, urging residents to take advantage of the amnesty before enforcement begins.
Speaking to Denkyiraman News, the Municipal Police Commander, DSP Simon Boavo, attributed the low turnout to misconceptions surrounding the exercise. He said some residents believe the amnesty could be used to identify and arrest firearm owners.
To address these concerns, DSP Boavo said residents may now submit firearms at Denkyiraman Radio and other designated radio stations within the municipality, instead of reporting directly to police stations.
The Police Command reiterated that the amnesty is aimed at improving public safety and stressed that individuals who surrender firearms within the stipulated period will not be prosecuted.
