Asante Kotoko Sporting Club has appointed South African tactician Eric Tinkler as its new Head Coach with immediate effect.
The appointment forms part of the club’s efforts to strengthen its technical department and build a competitive team capable of achieving sustained success on the domestic and continental fronts.
Coach Tinkler, who holds a CAF A Licence, brings more than 30 years of experience in elite football as both a player and coach.
He has managed several top South African Premier Soccer League clubs, including Cape Town City FC, SuperSport United, Maritzburg United, Orlando Pirates and Bidvest Wits FC.
During his coaching career, he guided Orlando Pirates to the final of the CAF Champions League and led SuperSport United to the CAF Confederation Cup final. He also won domestic honours, including the MTN 8 and the Telkom Knockout.
As a player, Tinkler earned 48 caps for South Africa and captained the national team at the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations. He was a member of the Bafana Bafana squad that won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations and represented the country at the 1998 FIFA World Cup.
His playing career also saw him feature for Barnsley FC of England, Cagliari Calcio of Italy and Vitória de Setúbal of Portugal.
The club said Coach Tinkler’s tactical expertise, structured approach and commitment to player development would complement the work of Director of Football, Stanley Menzo Purl, as Kotoko seeks to establish a strong football structure.
Mr James Osei Brown, Board Chairman of Asante Kotoko, said the club was delighted to welcome the experienced coach.
“Eric brings a wealth of experience, discipline and winning pedigree to our technical bench. His track record of developing players and delivering results at the highest level in African football makes him the right man to lead our team at this important time,” he said.
He expressed confidence that Coach Tinkler would help the club achieve its ambitions and wished him success in his new role.
Coach Tinkler described his appointment as a privilege and expressed his determination to build a successful team.
“I am honoured and excited to join one of Africa’s most storied football institutions. Asante Kotoko’s rich history, passion for success and ambition for development are well known across Africa. I look forward to working with the players, staff and management to build a team that can compete and win both at home and on the continental stage,” he said.
