There was widespread excitement among students in the Twifo Atti-Morkwa District of the Central Region as the government commenced the distribution of free sanitary pads to schools in the area.
The initiative, spearheaded by the NDC government under President John Dramani Mahama, has been warmly welcomed by beneficiaries. Many students expressed relief, sharing that the high cost and limited availability of sanitary pads had previously forced them to miss school during their menstrual periods. They believe this support will now enable them to attend classes consistently and with confidence.
The District Education Director, Madam Augustina Attakora, praised the initiative, noting that menstrual hygiene challenges are a major cause of absenteeism and school dropouts among girls. She urged parents to support the effort by providing additional supplies and promoting proper menstrual hygiene practices at home.
District Chief Executive, Hon. Isaac Yawson, revealed that the Ghana Education Service (GES) has so far distributed 16,900 sanitary pads across schools in the district. He described the intervention as a significant step toward achieving gender equality in education and empowering girls to stay focused on their academic goals.
